Newborn hedgehogs are called "hedgehogs" or "baby hedgehogs." Interestingly, the mother hedgehog doesn't suffer from the thorns during birth. This is because when the hedgehogs are first born, their thorns are covered with a soft membrane. This membrane dries out shortly after birth, and the thorns begin to harden.
