So there are no more DEC rewards until you reach some league in Splinterlands. What is the incentive for new players? Just spend more money?

Pretty much, I think you need to reach bronze 2 or so before you start earning DEC which is a measure they had to take in order to prevent bots flooding the system and killing the economy. Basically, you either have to rent or buy 15k collection power to get to the real rewards in the game which are in Silver League. Trying to grow organically in Bronze is pretty much impossible.
Looks like I should just give it up altogether. Never really liked the game but it seems like a no-brainer to earn a bit. Now with what you wrote, I should just give up trying to get there organically. Maybe time to cash out before it is worth nothing.
I would say it's unlikely for Splinterlands to go down to nothing the game is far too established and has too good of a team and funding for that. I still believe it is possible to do ok with that game getting a good return but fully going for organic growth is really hard as a casual player that is not willing to at least invest the needed time. I would say that is the case with nearly all crypto play2earn games.
