The object you see in the picture is well-known in our country called 'Laaltaan'. Laaltaan were also widely used as a source of night light till late nineteenth century. At present it is not seen much. The main reasons behind this are increase in power production and availability of batteries and bulbs. Laaltaan are now only part of our memory.

We called this as "lamparilya" in our place. I remember this is so useful in our place last year during December after we encountered a strong typhoon that greatly affected us. One of those is our electrical power.
