What Is a 'Hard Fork'? (Coins)
There are 2 different kinds of "hard forks". The first hard fork is when a coin forks and becomes a new chain. The old chain is discarded if nobody continues to support it. All chain data is migrated to the new chain. If there is support for the old chain, then the old chain continues on and a new coin is created. The second kind of hard fork is when an existing coins code is copied and a new chain is formed. A new coin is "forked" from the copied one and now that new coin contains the copied coins chain data.
