There are more than 400 monasteries in Serbia. Almost all monasteries belong to the category of martyrs - they have been looted, burned and destroyed several times. Nevertheless, as soon as time calmed down, they were rebuilt. One of the oldest and most beautiful is the Studenica monastery. It was built in the period between 1186 and 1196. During the hunt, the medieval prefect Stefan Nemanja came to a deserted mountain place of exceptional beauty and decided to build his endowment there. Studenica is a shrine that has preserved in its authentic form not only the temple but also the entire complex with walls, parts of buildings and the foundations of fortified towers for defense against attackers, a high entrance tower and dining room of Saint Sava. Under the tutelage of Saint Sava, spiritual and intellectual creator Serbian state, the Studenica Monastery became the cultural, spiritual and medical center of medieval Serbia.
