"Come on slow poke!" the boy yelled. "I'm going as fast as I can!" The girl yelled back.
The boy waited at the top of the hill for his girlfriend. When suddenly, she tripped and tumbled down the hill. "Stephanie!" the boy yelled as he raced down the hill after her. When he approached her, she was laughing.
"Steph are you okay?"
"Mason I'm fine, it was fun, you should try it!"
"Are you kidding me?"
"Oh come on scaredy cat."
"I'm not scared I just don't want to get a concussion"
"Oh fine!"
The couple got up and made their way back up the hill and settled at the top. They had a wonderful meal and it was coming to an end.
"Stephanie, I have something for you."
Stephanie raised her eyebrows.
"Close your eyes"
She did. She felt the cold metal slip onto her finger. She opened her eyes and gasped.
"Calm down I'm not asking you to marry me."
Mason chuckled.
"Well then what is this for?"
"It's a promise ring " Mason said.
"And what are you promising me?"
"I'm promising you that I'll love you for the next 5 years."
"Only 5 years?" The girl asked in a taunting voice.
"I'm only joking. I promise to love you till the day I die. Look, once we finish school we have that promise in a marriage contract. I know it's early to be talking about marriage but I feel like there is no one else I'd rather love, than you".
The girl stared lovingly at her boyfriend. "I love you, Mason" and then she kissed him.
A few days later...
"And then we kissed." Stephanie finished teller her bestfriend, Billie about her date with Mason. "That is adorable! He's a keeper, steph" she said.
Stephanie chuckled. "He sure is."
4 years later...
December 12 2011
Mason stood at the alter, anxiously awaiting his fiancรฉ.
Stephanie stood behind the doors, waiting for the music to start.
"Okay in 3, 2, 1!" a woman said and the music started and the doors opened to reveal the bride. She walked down the aisle as if she was walking on air. She got to the altar and said her vows, as did he. He slipped the same ring thatbhe gave her, those 4 years ago. And they ended the ceremony with a kiss.
5 months later...
Stephanie led Mason over to his favorite chair and asked him to sit down. She was about to tell him some big news. Mason sat and waited for his beloved wife to speak. She said nothing. He didn't rush her.
Finally, she said it. "You're going to be a dad."
Mason stopped breathing for a few seconds. Then he jumped out of his chair and hugged stephanie. "Seriously?!? You're not joking?"
"Nope, this is real."
Mason placed his hand on Stephanie's stomach and kissed her. Oh how their future seemed so bright... but it darkened way too soon.
November 6th, 2012
Hospitals are horrible. But funerals are much worse. At least he kept his promise. Mason loved Stephanie until the day he died. He died on October 19th, 2012. Hit by a car. 22 years old. He was too young. Almost nobody came to the funeral. Just family and about 4 friends of Masons. Mason never had many friends in high school, he was the nerdy kid nobody liked. Stephanie was the kid that everyone thought was satanic, emo, or goth. She was none of those things, she was just herself. But so was Mason. Yes he had the best grades and knew how to play nearly every video game and he was never really liked for it. Stupid stereotypes. Always getting in the way of everything. His best friends at the funeral though. So are Stephanie's. Everyone at the funeral knows how much she cared for him. And vice versa. She wanted to follow him. Back in october, but then she remembered the baby. Her and Mason's son, still yet to be born.
And now Stephanie stood at the foot of Mason's grave. Once she said goodbye to him, they would bury him. 6 feet deep. On the hill where Mason gave Stephanie her ring. Her white gold ring with 7 rubies. 7 rubies for Stephanie's 7 special memories, only known ot her.
Standing at her husband's grave, she felt a kick. Stephanie already decided her son's name, Mason. Little Mason was kicking at his dad's grave. The tears Stephanie was keeping at bay, fell. She put her hand on her growing stomach, took a deep breath and slowly knelt down. She threw her flowers in the grave and they landed.
They landed right on top of the coffin containing, Mason R. Echavez.
So now it's the year 2021 and Stephanie Echavez is twisting her ring around her finger, giving her 9 year old son his only birthday wish. The story about the man he was named after. His dad.
