This is the first time they have succeeded: the scientists separated a particle from one of its physical properties, thus creating a "quantum Cheshire Cat". The phenomenon is named after the enigmatic feline from the story of "Alice in Wonderland", which fades leaving its smile floating in the air. == >>>In the world we know, an object and its properties always go together. A spinning ball, for example, cannot be separated from its rotation. Quantum theory predicts that a particle (such as a photon or neutron) can be physically separated by one of its properties, such as its polarization or its magnetic moment (the force with which it couples to an external magnetic field). "We found the cat in one place, and its smile in another," the researchers explain. The feline analogy is a nod to Schrodinger's cat - the imaginary experiment in which, inside a box, a cat is dead and alive at the same time, illustrating a quantum phenomenon known as superposition.<<< == http://goo.gl/UxB5tj #Science
