Baracoa The city was founded on August 15, 1511 under the name of Our Lady of the Assumption of Baracoa by the Spanish conqueror Diego Velázquez, who then held the title of Adelantado. It is the oldest settlement on the Island after the arrival of the Spanish colonizers and hence it owes its name to Ciudad Primada. In 1518 it received the appointment of city. It was the first capital and the first bishopric of the Island. Declared a National Monument, the city is located between the Macaguanigua and Miel rivers. Among its natural attractions is the Toa River, marked by numerous waterfalls, the best known being El Saltadero with 17 meters high and the Yunque Mountains that owes its name to the similarity of the same with the piece used by blacksmiths. The so-called Sleeping Beauty, seen from afar, resembles a young woman lying down.
