The Havanese comes from the western Mediterranean region and developed along the Spanish and Italian coastline. It would appear that these dogs were introduced early in Cuba by the Italian captains of the large ships. By mistake, the main tan color of these dogs (reddish-brown tobacco color) has given rise to the legend that it would be a breed originating in Havana, the capital of Cuba. Historical events on the island led to the total disappearance of the old Habanero bloodlines in Cuba. Some descendants survived in the United States of America, after having left the island and smuggled the puppies. Currently we can find these dogs mainly in the United States, Canada, Mexico and in some countries in South America. They are very playful dogs and good with older people, more than with children. They love to climb on furniture and are one of the smallest companion breeds.
