National currency of the Republic of Cuba. Along with the Cuban convertible peso, it is one of the two currencies that circulate on the island. Although the first Cuban pesos were issued by the Spanish Bank of the Island of Cuba in the colonial period, the country did not create its national currency until the government of General Mario García Menocal. The standard used was silver and the reference was the US dollar. Cuban currency was always printed abroad, first in the United States and then in the countries of the former Socialist Camp, until 1995 when the country began manufacturing its own banknotes.
