El manjuarí o catán cubano es un pez dulceacuícola del orden de los Lepisosteiformes perteneceinte a la especie (Atractosteus tristoechus) . Es endémico de Cuba e Isla de la Juventud, teniendo registros sin confirmar en otras islas y humedales semitropicales de algunos países centroaméricanos en la vertiente del Atlántico y el mar Caribe. Su origen se remonta al período carbonífero de la paleozoica en que aparecieron los primeros reptiles, mediante el registro fósil se ha observado que las especies actuales de manjuaríes mantienen pocas diferencias morfológicas con sus ancestros, por lo que se les considera fósiles vivientes. It is endemic to Cuba and Isla de la Juventud, having unconfirmed records in other islands and semi-tropical wetlands of some Central American countries on the Atlantic and Caribbean slopes. Its origin dates back to the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic when the first reptiles appeared, through the fossil record it has been observed that the current species of manjuaríes maintain few morphological differences with their ancestors, which is why they are considered living fossils.
