If you're buying a real Christmas tree, on the first day leave the bottom of the trunk in a bucket of water overnight. Christmas trees require 4.5 liters (1 gallon) of water a day, and by soaking it overnight you will lessen the risk of it going brown early and becoming an unsightly fire hazard. Try and water it every day for the first week.
