Scientists studying glacial ice have discovered viruses nearly 15,000 years old in two ice samples taken from the Tibetan Plateau in China. Most of those viruses, which survived because they had remained frozen, are unlike any viruses that have been cataloged to date. Researchers have also found intact smallpox and the Spanish flu viruses in 100-year-old frozen tissue samples and an outbreak of anthrax in Siberia five years ago is believed to be the result of the pathogen preserved in reindeer carcasses.
