Earlier today I was almost mugged. I can talk about it now because I finally feel safe. I was on my way to work, I boarded a cab, it had two passengers. A man in front, and a woman in the back. I sat in the backseat asked for the fare and our journey began. We rode for about 3-4 minutes then the woman sitting beside me suddenly said she was alighting here and the driver stopped. In retrospect I should have seen that as a red flag because it wasn’t a bus stop. I wanted to open the door on my side and step out for the woman to alight but the driver and the other passenger in front said no she should open the door on her side. I didn’t like the idea because the incoming traffic is directed to her side door and I just didn’t feel she would be safe alighting on that side, since she wasn’t against it, I felt okay “it’s her choice”. The woman made an attempt to open the door then she stopped and said, driver I want to carry my bag from your booth. The driver was like “Madam nah you get the bag wey dey for booth?”, she responded in the affirmative. The driver then proceeded to rant about how he doesn’t like “Yoruba” people. Then he started telling the story of how he picked her up from a particular station, he asked what was in the bag she wanted to put in his booth and she said it was clothes. He then said when another passenger wanted to alight, he opened his booth to take out this other person’s bag and he mistakenly opened the woman’s bag, and all he saw was money. He claimed the bag was filled to the brim with money. Immediately I heard that, without thinking or second guessing I jumped out of the cab. Before I could figure out what was happening the cab zoomed off. This is a popular modus operandi for mugging people in my town, I am just so grateful to God for getting me out safely, unscathed, nothing missing, nothing broken.
