Marburg Virus Disease This virus is from the same family of viruses as Ebola, causes and spread in similar way to Ebola. 3. Lassa Fever Like Ebola and Marburg, this fever is a viral haemorrhagic illness that damages liver, spleen or kidneys and ruptures blood vessels. It is often transmitted by the urine faeces if Mastomys rats, native to Africa via contaminated household objects. 4. MERS-COV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) This viral respiratory illness is one of the three coronaviruses to cause a threat to global health. It is thought to spread through coughing but this has not yet proven and so far doesn't spread fast from person to person unless in close contact. 5. SARS ( Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) SARS already caused global pandemic in 2003 which looks relatively insignificant now compared with COVID-19 but it does not mean it won't return and may cause much damage. 6. NIPAH Distant cousin of measles that caused outbreaks in South-East Asia in 1998 that can cause brain swelling. Like many if the diseases on the list, NIPAH is common in bats specifically fruit bats. 7. ZIKA This virus is mostly causes mild disease like fever, rash and muscle pain. However Zika caused an alarming phenomenon of birth defects in 2015-2016 and referred as congenital Zika syndrome. Zika is spread by Aedes mosquitoes which also transmit dengue and chikungunya viruses. 8. Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever This mostly affects animals especially livestock and is usually spread through the bite if an infected tick, but people can get infected when in contact with recently slaughtered animals. Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is endemic to Asian, African, and the Balkans where the tick species that spread was found. 9. Rift Valley Fever Rift Valley Fever is a mosquito-borne disease that mostly affects animals but can only infect people when they come in contact with the blood or milk of the infected animals. They can also be infected through mosquito bites but so far no human-to-human transmission has been documented. 10. Monkeypox Symptoms similar to smallpox such as widespread pustular rash with fever and exhaustion and is mostly spread by contact with wild animals such as rodents and primates. Monkeypox can be spread between people through contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets or contaminated clothes and beddings.
