Blue Moon But Not Blue? If we have MayFlower, Strawberry moon last time, we also have this Blue Moon also known as the "Sturgeon Moon" last August 22, 2021. And this time I captured it with the nearest light above which is the planet Jupiter. We usually say "once in a blue moon" as common expression that means not often or rarely since blue moon occurs about seven times every 19 years or once every 2.7 years on average. It was not called blue for its colour but because it happens during a calendar year with 13 full moons instead of the usual 12 full moons. The 3rd full moon is the blue moon in a season with 4 full moons.
