Being friends with some does not have to have borders or qualifications based in these implications but for me it should be genuine. If I have a friend who shows qualities of what real friendship is supposed to be to me, I don't care about what people think, feel or say about him or her but rather base on the quality of his view in friendship to stay with them . And that is what friendship should be of not just anything people talk of.
You are right, most people do not understand the true definition of friendship.
