These are mamatus clouds also known as mamatus cumulus, they form a pattern of pockets that are located below the main mass of clouds. Made mostly of ice, these clouds can stretch for hundreds of kilometers in each direction, while individual formations can remain static for ten minutes. Justifying its frightening appearance, Mamatus clouds are always heralds of an impending storm, or some even worse weather.
