“You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You see the conduct of all people, and you give them what they deserve.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭32:19‬) Many of the dark clouds that hang over us are the result of sins from our past that have been left unresolved; God is the final judge and there is a day in court scheduled for all of us. I can remember sins in my own life that, even during the process of committing them, I could feel a sense of dread that God was watching and some day I would have to pay. Yet I continued. Like Eve in the Garden, I kept one eye on the fruit and one eye on the sky, just to see what would happen. God’s promise was fulfilled: sin results in death—death of innocence, death of relationships, death of peace and joy, and finally, physical death accompanied by spiritual death. Dark clouds indeed. But this same God does great and mighty miracles. He sent Jesus to take the death that I so cavalierly accepted. It seems sometimes that I’m trapped in a revolving door of willful sin and shameful confession. But thank God, in my foolishness his wisdom prevails. His compassion for his children—his love and forgiveness—is the mightiest of all miracles. And I don’t get what I deserve.
