“I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” (Matthew‬ ‭9:13‬) Salvation doesn’t stop at the cross—that’s where it starts. Everyone who has even a slight sense of self-awareness knows they have a mess to clean up, and whether they understand that it’s called sin is something the conviction of the Holy Spirit will help with. Jesus makes us right with God. If I can put it this way, that’s the easy part; easy because God is loving and just and holy, and he desires a right relationship with us. The harder step is making us right with other people. Not everyone will admit they are a sinner. You can pray for your persecutor, you can love your enemy, but those warm sentiments may not be returned. Just like us before we opened the door to Jesus; who knows how long he was knocking before we finally heard it? So salvation of our earthly relationships may or may not ever happen, but that’s no excuse to stop trying, to stop loving. They need God’s love, and they probably don’t even know it—which means it might be ours that shines the light on his.
