“And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem?” (Luke‬ ‭13:4‬) The events in your life are not necessarily a consequence of your actions. I know people who work really hard that just can’t seem to get ahead, and I know people who rarely lift a finger but always experience wild success. Jesus was asking a more basic question in reply to the concerns of his audience. When death comes, regardless of the cause or whose fault it is, will you be ready? Don’t worry about things over which you have no control. His first words as he began his ministry were, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” He repeated this theme for the next three years as he traveled the region teaching and preaching. How you respond to Jesus, and when, is considerably more important than which building falls on you or why.
