“Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.’” (John 9:16a) Learn to do good, wherever and whenever. This isn’t only about Jesus seemingly violating customs or established norms, it’s about doing the right thing because it’s right. Jesus healed a blind man because he was blind, not because it fit the schedule. He said, “We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.” How many miracles go undone because we walk right by the opportunity? None of the things God has planned to bring glory to his name will be left undone, but the question is who will do them? If not you, then the blessings for obedience will go to someone else. The religious leaders didn’t experience much joy because they always wanted glory for themselves—evidence of the unhappiness of their lives can be seen in their constant complaining and jealousy. You may not be able to spit into the dirt and make mud that will heal blindness, but you can slow down enough to offer whatever help you can to whatever need you see. How many years had passed and that man was still sitting and begging? “His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar” were equally blind. I believe we are missing the incredible power of God all around us because our eyes are closed.
