“I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears.” (Psalms‬ ‭6:6‬) This is David, the shepherd who would go after a lion or bear that had stolen one of his father’s sheep, grab it by the jaw, and club it to death; David, who would fight the giant Goliath and defeat him with a slingshot; David, about whom the crowds would roar, “Saul has killed thousands, and David his ten thousands!” Brave man, bold warrior, mighty king, reduced to a pool of tears, “worn out from sobbing.” The duration, or frequency, or severity of a trial—all can serve to break down one’s mental and physical reserves of strength. It can happen to anyone. Jesus on his knees in the garden appealed to the Father, “Please take this cup of suffering away from me,” and proceeded to pray with such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground in great drops like blood. Jesus, who had defied Satan’s temptations in the desert. Jesus, who had driven the money changers from the Temple with a whip. Jesus, who had commanded the wind and the waves to be still. Every champion has his limits. You have yours. When you find them, do what these two did. David’s conclusion was, “The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer.” Jesus pledged, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Turn your trial over to God, and do not stray from trusting him. Even if it means your death, he has already promised you new life. So never give up, never give in. Your victory is in your faithfulness.
