“[Love is not] rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.” (1 Corinthians ‭13:5‬) “It does not demand its own way.” He’s trying to teach us something. God knows how to love without demanding a response; He wants our love but He won’t pitch a fit trying to get it. This is love on the celestial scale. Since we were created in His image, we must at some point start acting like Him. If He isn’t irritated by our constant rebuffs, why must we be so quick to bristle at those who fail to return our affections? What would love look like that wasn’t measured? God loves us. Period. Here is the difference between Him and us: His value isn’t determined by the opinions of others or who chooses to reply—He doesn’t need approval. But we do. And we have it. We have God’s approval because of Jesus. If we could understand that our value is found in Him alone, we could love others without any need for them to return it. We could suffer an offense without instantly clamoring for vengeance—and it’s considerably easier to forgive when there is no record of wrongs. Instead of demanding our own way, maybe we could practice the way of our Maker.
