“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.” (John‬ ‭9:1‬) How can a blind man wish for sight? Another passage records two blind men sitting alongside the road outside Jericho begging Jesus to heal them. How did they know what it was they were asking? They had never seen anything; they had no reference points to light or colors or shades. Perhaps they had been told; others around them could see. Maybe it’s just the natural human desire to possess whatever you don’t have, the internal drive to explore, to discover. Or it could simply be the sense that they weren’t complete. I believe these characteristics are the same in someone who is absent the Spirit of God. Everyone is born blind to holiness; being sinful is the same as being ignorant of beauty, of kindness, of generosity. We might hear about it from someone who has all of their senses, someone who has been healed. But even without holiness there is a burning desire to be whole—what’s missing is obvious by the vacuum that it leaves. We were built for completion, just like the blind men were born with eyes. Imagine for a minute the heart of a mother who realizes her baby can’t see her; she hopes for a cure, a medical advancement that can reverse the cause. Compare that emotion to the heart of God who, just like the grieving mother, knows that those he created in his image can’t see him and never will unless there is some miraculous intervention. Enter Jesus. Jesus came to fix what is broken, to give sight to those who are blind in more ways than one, to give hope, and to increase the desire for more, for deeper exploration of God, to understand the breadth of his wisdom and majesty, the fullness of his glory. If you are sitting alongside the road of life, feeling unsatisfied and incomplete, missing the beauty that is actually all around you and in you, cry out to Jesus “I want to see!” #beautiful #life
