“In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.” (1 Peter ‭5:10‬) You suffer for a purpose. Anyone can smile in good times, but what about bad? How well do you suffer? God, “in his kindness,” calls you to be like Jesus. The encouragement in this verse isn’t only that through the suffering he is making you like your Lord, but also that it is temporary. In “a little while” he will restore you, he will support and strengthen you. Time is a variable that only God commands and there is just the right amount for all he plans to do with you. If you are suffering, know that there is an end. If it feels like you won’t last the storm, don’t trust your feelings, trust God. Look back on other days and realize that you are on this side of them. You made it then and you’ll make it now. Why? God is preparing you to share in his eternal glory. No champion athlete stands on the podium without going through the grueling workouts and exhausting contention necessary to win the prize. About Jesus the author of Hebrews writes, “Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross.” Because of the joy awaiting you, you will endure yours.
