Was the lockdown really helpful in fighting covid-19?

There is no doubt that many countries implemented the lockdown rules in their countries, but the question is, did it stop the spread of covid-19?. In many countries, I can categorically tell you that they witnessed their peak while in lockdown. The lockdown rules was completely flaunted by many citizens as it seemed it couldn't be enforced.
