Sahara desert was green in past? Sahara desert is located in the part of north Africa. It is the largest desert on earth. However some studies believe that it was green and was covered with green plants in 5000 years ago. But today there is no green plants found in Sahara desert. It is only covered with mounds of sands now a days. Sahara was green due to monsoon seasonal rain fall. There was green era in this region which was called as "Green Sahara period" and there was a lot of rainfall due to monsoon season. However, Scientists were able to study plants components which were present in sediments. They study the climate change in that era. But main reason behind this desertification was Earth's tilted axis which changed after 25years and became the cause of intense solar radiations in that region. Automatically monsoon was ended. However due to shift of monsoon season from north Africa this Green Sahara became a desert.
