The Illusion of Love: A Spiritual Disease in Disguise When a person likes someone, they are afflicted with a kind of mental illness that causes them to view that person in an exaggerated way. It’s just like how a sick person sometimes fails to perceive an object in its true reality. Even food doesn’t taste the same to them. Similarly, when someone is "afflicted" with the disease of love and eventually marries the person they adored, they begin to face reality. They start realizing that their beloved is not exactly how they imagined them before marriage. Gradually, various flaws and shortcomings start to appear—though earlier, they used to think there could be no one better than this person. That’s why love is often called a kind of disease or illness that leads people into delusion—and many don’t even realize it. Because of this affliction, many religious individuals have lost their piety, many students have destroyed their academic careers, and countless people have seen their futures ruined. And in the end, the person they were chasing turns out to be nothing special after all. So, is there any benefit at all in this disobedience to Allah called "love"? Hmm! There is—but it is very minimal compared to its harms. It’s quite similar to alcohol and gambling. Allah the Almighty says: **"They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.'"** [ Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:219]
