President of the United States (US) Donald Trump said he would cut off relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) who was accused of failing to provide accurate information related to the spread of the corona virus (Covid-19). Trump also accused WHO of being controlled by China.
Reporting from Bloomberg, Trump's statement delivered at a press conference at the White House, Friday (05/29/2020) Washington Time. Trump said the changes need to be made by WHO and directly involve the US. However, WHO is said to refuse.
"We will end our relationship with WHO today," Trump said.
Trump's remarks were conveyed with a series of complaints against Beijing, ranging from trade practices to legislative actions that endangered Hong Kong's autonomy.
Trump made a four-page letter, containing complaints against WHO. He hoped the WHO could show an independent attitude from China.
The letter was made Trump a few hours after President Xi Jinping spoke to the World Health Assembly via video. Xi promised to disburse funds of US $ 2 billion to fight the pandemic in the next two years while urging international cooperation to defeat the virus.
The US has historically been the biggest sufferer for WHO. Every year, the US provides data of around US $ 100 million to WHO, plus US $ 102 million to US $ 410 million in additional voluntary contributions, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Issue like this needs to be examined and settled diplomatically. Trump shouldn't be enemy to people here and there.
