Can radiation damage mining devices of BTC and BCH? Let's see, Imagine you can see all the radiation and particles that arrive at Earth every minute. You'll be scared. Millions of charged particles and neutrons arrive from everywhere in the space every second. Most of them don't even interact with you or the surroundings because the atmosphere acts as a shield. But there are some that could interact with the electronic devices and may produce Single Event Upset. This means that the state of a bit can be changed from 0 to 1 producing fatal errors in the devices. Google reports every week some issue with this SEUs So, this could in some case make someone lose the mining of a block and miss the reward. The mining devices sometimes are protected against this kind of errors, but could be some unexpected errors caused by radiation. But, there are some documented cases where the elecotronic devices fail because of strong solar winds. The most important one is the Carrington event. I will talk about it in the next post and what could occurr to the safety of the blockchain if this happens.
